What are the new (Sept 2012) rules regarding membership and required information?

Change is in the wind, and the wind is a blowin' at the IGO. If you have been paying attention lately you know that we have a new/revised set of bylaws (and they are now posted on the IGO web site) and some changes coming your way so that IGO can accommodate formal incorporation of the group and maintenance of our legal/legitimate non-profit status.

The critical change at the IGO site is a new set of requirements handed down from the State of Iowa. These requirements demand that IGO maintain a list of "members" complete with everyone's first name, last name, street address, phone number and date of birth. All of this information is REQUIRED by the state if we want to establish and maintain our new status.

We will never share this information with 3rd parties, but we simply have to obtain it in order to function legitimately.

Also, we need to have individuals ONLY as members. No more couples or families listed as a single 'member'. Sorry, another rule handed to us. And as long as we are listing rules...only those members who are 18 or older will be allowed to vote online, that's why we need your date of birth.

So, here's what we need you to do... Login to the IGO web site (not the forums!) and look on the left side of the page for your username. Below that you should see a "My account" link. Click it. Now you should be viewing your account info. Near the top of the page you should see an "Edit" link. Click it. Now you see even more of your account information with fields provided where you can edit things.

If you currently share an account with your spouse or someone else then we would like to you change your username at this time (so that your spouse or partner can create a new account of their own). Most of our IGO users specify their geocaching name as their username…that’s great! Keep it up, but make a small change. For example, if your real name is John Doe and your IGO username is currently “JD and Sons” then please consider changing your IGO username to “JD and Sons – John”. Simple enough, right? Later on your partners (sons) can create their own new accounts under their own names like “JD and Sons – Bob” and “JD and Sons – Pete”.

OK, whether you change your username or not, you also need to find the “Profile” button on your account page. Click it. Now you should see lots more information about your account, including a new section of “Required Info”. Note that every field inside this section has a red asterisk beside it. That means each of these new fields is REQUIRED. You won’t be able to save/update your account until you have filled in each of these, and if you don’t fill these in your rights and privileges as an IGO member (including the right to cast one ballot in the election) may be revoked.

Note:  As of July 2013 you are NO LONGER REQUIRED TO ENTER YOUR BIRTHDATE to qualify for voting.  Instead, you simply need to check the box indicating that you are at least 18 years of age.  If you fail to check this box you will NOT be elligible to vote.

Once you have filled in all the required information, and made any other changes as you wish, be sure to scroll down to the bottom of the form and click “Save”. If you don’t, all your changes will be lost and you’ll have to start all over again.

Now, if you are one of the folks who previously shared an account with someone, we ask that you visit the web site as a guest and use the “Create new account” link to create your own new account. The forms you need to fill in for this account will look very much like those that we just walked through.

There are two VERY IMPORTANT REQUIREMENTS when creating a new account:

1) Create a username that is recognizable as something related to geocaching OR at the very least, don’t use an account name that ends in a long string of digits and be sure you fill in ALL the required info. Someone who tries to open a new account with a username of kjsnjkerp13432, for example, will probably be denied. Why you ask? Because spam bots typically generate nonsensical usernames like that and spammers are not welcome at IGO!

2) You MUST register using a UNIQUE e-mail address! If you previously shared an e-mail address with your spouse or partner, it’s time to go get a new address. Any valid e-mail address (even a free one from Gmail, Yahoo, MSN, etc.) will do, just so long as you can send and receive e-mail to confirm your registration.

Even if you follow these rules, your new account won’t be active immediately so be patient, somebody will review and authorize it in a day or two. Also, your required information will be reviewed by the Board and if you meet voting eligibility rules (18 or older and a resident of Iowa, or a non-resident who has petitioned for voting rights) you'll be declared an eligible voter...but that review could also take a day or two.

There are many ways for you to participate in YOUR IGO newsletter.  The Search is a newsletter that is FOR YOU, BY YOU

Can I contribute photos to the Images of the IGO?

If you have some images you want to share here please scale them to exactly 620x206 pixels and send them to admin@iowageocachers.org along with a title for each image.  If the images are suitable for publication they will probably show up in our new gallery and on the home page.

A couple of notes about the home page Images of the IGO block...

  • Every time you visit the IGO home page the system picks 5 Images of IGO at random for display.  Each time you come back you'll see a different set of five.
  • Move your cursor over an image to pause the the slide rotation and to see the "title" of the image.
  • Click on any image to display its details, and from the detail page click on either of the "Images of the IGO" links to see the thumbnail gallery of all images in our collection. Click on any thumbnail there to see the full-size image.

Where does IGO's "Land Manager" data come from?

OK, as of July 2010 the web site has a new data type: Land Manager.

Those of you who are BOD members (you know who you are) should have the ability to add/edit land manager data for the site now. To add a land manager just click "Create Content" and select "Land Manager", then fill in the blanks.

Any that you create and save will then appear on our new "Iowa Land Managers Data" page which can be found under the Primary Links below Organization Info.

Nothing too fancy thus far but please check it out and enter some data...then I'll come back in and make the presentation a little more robust.

Keep in mind also, that you can use the "File Attachments" link when editing/creating a new Land Manager in order to attach any permit forms or policy statements that the land manager has issued.

Can I put BBCode into my Stories and Comments here?

Why, yes, you can (now).   BBCode uses keywords inside square brackets to indicate things like changes in text style such as bold or italic or

text.  Originally the site would NOT interpret these codes, but lots of IGO members use these codes in our forums and  in their "signature blocks", so it only makes sense to show them properly here.   Enjoy!

And, by the way, if you want to learn much more about BBCode you should check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBCode.

I have an account but can't log in. What do I do now?

If you know you have a valid web site (and forums) account here but can't log in to the web site there are a couple things you should do.

Note:  Some users have experienced inability to login when in fact they ARE logged in...sometimes 5 or 6 times simultaneously!   If the site returns no errors but keeps prompting you to login then you ALMOST CERTAINLY need to clear you cookes and browser cache... see items 1 and 2 below.

1)  Most login problems are due to bad browser "cookies".  Cookies are stored on your computer, not the website, and they hold your login inforomation (and other data) so that you don't have to repeat it each time you visit.  If you have logged in before and can't get back in now you almost certainly have a corrupted cookie.  Look in your browser menu and find the option to clear your cookies.  After having done that please try to log in to the web site again.

2)  Occassionally your browser cache (stored images of web pages you visit) becomes corrupted.  There have been cases where a member logs in successfully but is shown a page that indicates they have not logged in.  This is usually due to the browser having cached a login failure page that it displays in place of the web site itself.  Clear your browser cache and try again.

3)  If you find the username/password block doesn't appear to accept your credentials, try logging in at http://www.IowaGeocachers.org/?q=user.

4)  Visit the web site and click on the "Request new password" link there.  Follow the prompts to supply necessary information, then look for an e-mail from the site with additional information.

5)  If you're using Internet Explorer (any version) then consider UPGRADING to Firefox.  IE is  a pain in the a$$ of nearly every webmaster I know, and there are simply things that it can't/won't do PROPERLY.  For every hour I spend working on the web site I could easily spend another 4 hours making sure it works in Internet Explorer... and I have neither the time nor the patience to do that.

6)  If all else fails, send an e-mail to me, admin@tamatoledo.org, and include details of your login attempts... username, password (optional), any errors or warnings that you have recieved.  Screen shots of anything you see are extremely helpful... I don't see the same screens/site that you do!

How do I input or update my IGO stats?

To update/establish your stats here you need to login to the web site with your IGO member account name.  Then under your username find the “My Account” link and click it. Your account/profile/contact (and other) information will open.
Click the “Edit” tab so you can make changes to this information. Click “Profile” to get to your details. Please fill in your geocaching.com username where prompted then scroll down to the area where you can put in your stats. Enter any/all values as you like.
While you are in the edit screens I would also encourage you to fill in other information like your zip code, cache “favorites” and more.

As always, scroll all the way to the bottom of the form and click “Save” or all your changes will be lost.

Where's the map?

Any time you open a map page here and see only a blank space where the map should be, wait 30 seconds and click your browser refresh button.  The map images load from a different server and sometimes that server doesn't respond quickly enough to display the image on the first fetch.  If the refresh fails, click your mouse on the address bar (where the page address appears) and hit return to queue it to reopen.
